(I accidentally posted this under the first part, so I deleted it and am reposting it here.) I love rule #4. Chad Zimmerman made a YouTube video about how he learns kanji, and some native Japanese speakers wrote strongly opinionated comments saying that it’s necessary to memorize all of the readings (pronunciations) of each kanji. They didn’t take into account that children learn thousands of words before they even go to school and learn kanji. They learn them through conversation and context, just like in any other language. And then when they do learn kanji, they already know many of the example words given for the various readings. In addition, once they’ve learned a character, they encounter it over and over again in the world around them and in their various textbooks. So memorizing the readings makes sense for native speakers, but not for non-Japanese speakers with limited time and resources. I’ve tried memorizing readings out of context, and it’s turned out to be a waste of time in my case. Native speakers just do not understand that most adult foreigners learning their language have to go about things differently.
